You see the ads that pop up around springtime and especially around the fall/Christmas season – “Mini Sessions Coming Soon!”. But what is a mini-session and how is it different from a regular session? Here are 3 main differences between the two:
Time: a mini-session is exactly that. A session that has been condensed, usually 15-20 minutes, whereas a full-length family portrait session can last anywhere from 60 mins to 3 hours depending on what you’re looking for.
Price: A mini session is usually cheaper than a full-length family session. The session fee for my mini-sessions is usually $97 and the session fee for my full-length sessions is $250.
Location & Theme: because it’s a condensed session, mini-sessions usually take place at one location, usually a set that has been designed with a particular theme depending on the time of year
Mini Sessions are great for busy families who want to get updated photos but just can’t carve out enough time for a full-length family portrait session. It’s usually a no-fuss session and is over before the kids get tired or frustrated. They’re also great for trying out a new photographer you haven’t worked with before. It’s a low-risk investment and gives you a chance to work with the photographer and see how much you like their work. If you enjoy your experience at the mini-session, you could end up booking a full-length family session with the photographer. This will let you explore more options for locations, outfits, and photos that are more tailored to your family’s needs.
