Technology is ever-changing – There was once a time when floppy disks were all the rave for external storage. Nowadays, you’ll probably only see one of those in a tech museum or in the bottom of a box that has your old computer stuff in the attic. CDs were also widely used as storage for your photos, but now more photographers rely on online galleries because they are a lot more convenient for both the photographer and the client. Who knows what new technology will be around in the next 10-20 years and whether or not you’ll be able to use a flash drive from 2021 with it?
Technology can be corrupted – hard drives and flash drives are great for storage, but sometimes things just go wrong and they become corrupted, and when they do, you lose all access to your photos and files stored there. Unless you’re backing up your photos to multiple locations (and most people aren’t), you’re probably going to lose all of those precious memories if a hard drive or flash drive fails.
Social Media is fleeting – Remember MySpace? Yea, that’s no longer around and neither are the photos that you once shared on there with your custom-coded background and stickers while your profile played “Yeah” by Usher in the background. Facebook and Instagram are great for sharing your photos with friends and family, but they should not be your only way of sharing memories. These systems can fail or be replaced by newer social media and if you don’t have your photos stored elsewhere, there’s a good chance you’ll lose them as well when Facebook is no longer around.
Digitals don’t preserve a legacy – Remember what it was like to visit your grandparents and find old family albums filled with photos from a time when photos were rare and cherished possessions? That’s what preserving a family legacy is all about. It can be fun (or cringe) when Facebook pops up a photo that you uploaded 10 years ago and you stare at how much you’ve changed, but social media is fleeting and you probably won’t be able to share that same photo with a future generation if Facebook is no longer around. A printed photo can be passed down from generation to generation, preserving that legacy that families work so hard to build.
Printed photos help you see what’s important – when you have printed photos of your family around your house, you remind yourself of who is most important to you each time you pass them. It’s also a great way to show your family how much they are loved. You’ve taken the time and effort to print those photos and used them to decorate your house serving as a reminder of the people who love them and to remind them that they are in a safe space to express themselves.
It’s important to print the big moments but it’s even more important to print the small ones too. The ones where your child is sitting reading her favorite book. Or the snap you have of that one Sunday you decided to bake cookies together. These are the moments that deserve a place on your wall. Print your photos, and preserve your moment in time.
